Explore Africa: Comoros

Nestled in the Indian Ocean off the coast of East Africa, the Comoros archipelago is a beautiful country just waiting to be discovered. Known as “perfumed islands” for their fragrant plant life, the small island nation consists of four main islands, each packed with natural beauty, cultural richness, and historical significance.

With a population of just over 800,000, Comoros is one of the smallest countries in Africa. The nation boasts a unique blend of African, Arab, and French cultures, all of which are demonstrated in its vibrant music, cuisines, and the hospitality of its people.

Comoros’s history stretches back to the 15th century, as it was once an important stop on the East African trade routes. In the 19th century, it came under French control. In 1975, three of the four islands, Grande Comore, Mohéli, and Anjouan, declared their independence. The fourth island, Mayotte, is still under French control.

Once divided into several small kingdoms or sultanates, the island was home to powerful rulers, including Queen Djoumbé Fatima who reigned from 1842 to 1865. The queen was known for her strong leadership, successfully defending the island against external threats and bolstering its economy through trade and agriculture. Today, agriculture forms the backbone of the Comoros economy. The nation is known for its aromatic spices, which are used in perfumes and culinary creations.

While it’s not a tourism hub like its Indian Ocean neighbors Mauritius and Seychelles, Comoros has a ton to offer visitors with sandy beaches, clear seas, and volcanic landscapes. The islands are home to numerous rare and endangered species such as sea turtles, lemurs, and Moheli scops owls, and Livingstone’s fruit bats. Visitors can travel between the islands to see historical citadels and the medina, explore the Col de Patsy valley and Tatringa Falls, or visit white sand and volcanic rock beaches, Lac Salé, a volcanic salt lake, rainforests, mosques and palaces, and other sites.

Comoros is another reminder of the big things that come in small packages. With its stunning vistas, rich history, and diverse people, Comoros is a bright and beautiful African continent.

Long may she thrive!
