Explore Africa: Visit Swaziland

Nestled in the southern part of Africa, the Kingdom of Eswatini, formerly known as Swaziland, is a hidden gem with rich traditions, vibrant culture, and immense natural beauty. Despite its small size—comparable to the US state of New Jersey—this landlocked country has a lot to offer visitors. Eswatini, renamed in 2018, is one of the world’s few remaining absolute monarchies. The country is home to over 70 distinct clans, each contributing to nation’s rich culture.

For nature enthusiasts, Eswatini has the popular Hlane Royal National Park, the country's largest protected area. The park offers visitors the chance to spot the majestic “Big Five,” which includes lions, leopards, elephants, rhinoceros and the African buffalo. The Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary in the Ezulwini Valley – known as the Valley of Heaven – also provides opportunities for viewing wildlife, hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, along with breathtaking views.  

Lobamba is the spiritual and cultural heart of the country. Visitors can see the Royal Village, explore the Parliament Building, and learn about the country's history at the National Museum. For a taste of local life, the vibrant Swazi Market in Mbabane, the capital city, should be at the top of your list of places to visit.

If your visit is at the right time of year, you might be able to witness some traditional ceremonies, such as the Umhlanga (Reed Dance) ceremony, where young women perform traditional dances in honor of the Queen Mother. Another distinctive tradition is the Incwala kingship ritual, a national celebration held during the summer solstice. Outsiders are only permitted to some of this centuries-old tradition, while other aspects are strictly forbidden for outsiders. 

Despite the modern influences of globalization, Eswatini's culture remains strong and vibrant, with traditional customs and practices maintained and celebrated in communities throughout the country. Whether you're drawn to wildlife, culture and traditions, or the warm hospitality its people are known for, Eswatini is a beautiful nation with many places to explore.
